Crypt of Cthulhu No.61

  1. CRYPT OF CTHULHU No. 61 - A black ink and black color pencil drawing on an 11 x 14 size coquille board. It is the cover on a fanzine published by Robert Price. Here again, as he did for Crypt No.16, the editor, Robert Price, asked me to spoof an "EC" comics title; in this case, "MAD" magazine.

I always made an effort to be versatile as an illustrator, from job to job I used a variety of papers; smooth, textured, scratchboard, watercolor. And I used a variety of drawing instruments; pen and ink, color pencils, brushes, and scratchboard tools. I used different techniques, different styles. The subjects I illustrated ranged from straight science fiction to fantasy, to comic book art . . .

One day I was reading a fanzine, "Energumen," which featured a drawing of mine on the cover, and in the editorial the editor wrote nice things about my artwork, but ended with the comment that my artwork lacked "versatility". Which shook me up a bit, I lacked versatility? . . .

Years later I attended a SF convention in Buffalo NY where I met this editor for the first time, in a vestibule at the convention hall. He had a drink in his hand and was a bit unsteady on his feet. I took him gently by the elbow and led him to a nearby cushioned chair and said to him, "better sit down Mike". He sat down, took another sip of whatever he was drinking, looked up at me and said, "Shteven, the thing I like mosht about your work is your vershatility".

So there you are, the things you write for the public may be read by many, but they don't get to hear the things you say in private, when you have changed your opinion. That's why I think twice about writing something negative about someone in my website. And if you think I've been unfair to anyone, let me know.
